So let's get started with this Old Sepia Photo Effect Photoshop Tutorial....

1) Add Sepia Tone To Photo.

Open your photo that you want to add the old sepia photo effect to, then go to Layer >>> New Adjustment layer >>> Hue/Saturation.

Check the "Group with previous layer" box.

Check the "Colorize" box.

Hue 29, Saturation 29, Lightness 0

Click "OK"

And this is how the photo should look, and the settings we used.

2) Add Cracked Mud Texture To Photo.

This is to give the photo an old damaged look.

Open the texture photo, in our case it is the cracked mud texture. I modified the center of the photo to reduce some of the large cracks.

NOTE: The main photo and the texture photo should be about the same pixel dimensions, like 3000 x 2000, or the scaling will be wrong. For this photoshop tutorial, both photos were about 600 x 400 pixels.

Select the texture with the Rectangular Marquee Tool.

Then select Edit >>> Copy.

This is what the cracked mud texture photo looks like.

3) Paste The Cracked Mud Texture Into Original Photo.

Go back to the main photo, create a New Layer and change the layer name to "Texture".

With the new texture layer highlighted in the layers palette, Choose Edit >>> Paste, to paste the cracked mud texture into the texture layer.

In the layers palette, Select Overlay as the texture layer blending mode.

This is what the photo looks like now with the cracked mud texture added.

4) Add Gradient Fill Layer To Darken The Sky.

Create a New Fill Layer by selecting Layer >>> New Fill Layer >>> Gradient. This will allow us to adjust the darkness of the sky.

In the layers palette, Select Overlay as the gradient fill layer blending mode.

Double click on the gradient fill layer thumbnail in the layers palette to open the gradient fill editor box.

In the gradient fill editor box, click on the upper and lower stops to adjust the color and opacity of the gradient fill.

The left color is # 2A1A12 and the opacity is 100%.

The right color is # 995935 and the opacity is 0%.

This is what the photo looks like now with the gradient fill layer added.

5) Add Black Border Layer.

Create a New Layer by selecting Layer >>> New >>> Layer, or by clicking the new layer icon on the bottom of the layers palette, or click Shft+Ctrl+N. Rename this new layer "Black Border".

Use the Paint Bucket Tool to fill the new layer with black.

Choose the Elliptical Marquee Tool and make an oval selection over the black layer, and leave about a 1/4" of black on the middle edges of the photo.

Now delete the black oval selection, and then click Select >>> Deselect or type Ctrl+D, to deselect the oval.

This is what the photo looks like now with the black border layer added.

6) Blur And Adjust The Black Border Layer.

With the black border layer selected/highlighted in the layers palette, choose Filter >>> Blur >>> Gaussian Blur.

Set the Gaussian Blur radius to about 65 Pixels.

To adjust the size and position of the blurred black border, zoom out of the photo to leave some open work space around the photo.

Select the black border layer, select the Move Tool, then adjust the black border size and position until you like what you see.

This is what the photo looks like now with the black border layer blurred and its size and position adjusted.

7) Create New Adjustment Layer For Texture Layer.

I want to remove the color from the texture layer, so I will create a new adjustment layer for the texture layer.

With the texture layer selected/highlighted in the layers palette, choose Layer >>> New Adjustment Layer >>> Hue/Saturation.

Select the "Group with previous layer" box.

In the Hue/Saturation editor box, set the Hue to 0, Saturation to -100, and Lightness to 0.

This is what the photo looks like now with the colored removed from the texture layer.

8) Create New Adjustment Levels Layer.

This new adjustment levels layer will allow us to adjust the brightness and contrast of the whole photo.

Select Layer >>> New Adjustment Layer >>> Levels.

Don't select the "Group with previous layer" box, because we want this layer to affect all the layers.

In the Levels editor box, set the Channels to RGB, Input Levels to 6, 1.00, 216, and the Output Levels to 0, 255.

Make any final adjustments you would like and then save it as a TIFF, JPG, or Photoshop PSD file.

This is what the photo looks like now with the Levels adjustment.
